History
The Rhode Island Bible Society was founded in 1813. It was known alternately
as the Bible Society of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Its mission was to distribute free Bibles to
poor Rhode Islanders. Among the early leaders were Jabez Bowen (the first president), Moses Brown, his son Obadiah M. Brown
(the first treasurer), and Moses Brown’s son-in-law William Jenkins (the second treasurer).
